For 35 years, the Friends of the Oberpfälzer Künstlerhaus e.V. have been awarding work grants to artists with a connection to Bavaria in the fields of visual arts, composition and literature. In return, artists, writers and composers from our partner institutions are offered a residency at the International Artists' Residence in Schwandorf for four to eight weeks.

Currently, three guest artists are living and working in Fronberg as part of the exchange program: visual artists Nellie Appleby and Pamela Drix, as well as writer Moyette Gibbons. The artist exchange with the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts (VCCA), in collaboration with the Friends of the Oberpfälzer Künstlerhaus e.V., has been ongoing since 1989.

We warmly invite you to the Open Studios on Saturday, 05 July 2025 from 14:00 to 17:00 to view and listen to the works created in Fronberg and to personally connect with the exchange artists.

At 16:00, writer Moyette Gibbons will read from her texts.

Nellie Appleby works with photographic processes such as cyanotype and alternates living in the mountains of Virginia and South Florida. She spent her childhood in Botswana, studied anthropology and later earned a Master of Fine Arts in Photography and Film. Her life and work are deeply intertwined with the study of ecology and plants. Themes such as gardening, beauty, wilderness and cultural aspects are often featured in her work.

Pamela Drix lives and works in Ithaca, New York. Her graphics, often created as ink drawings, are inspired by landscape painting. She gives geometric forms to observed elements of nature, isolates specific aspects and transforms them into abstract shapes, merging the internal and external relationships of the subject into something new. In addition to her professional artistic training, including a Master of Fine Arts, she also taught drawing and printmaking in New York for twelve years.

Moyette Gibbons grew up in London and began writing her own prose texts as a child. She studied literature and history and earned her diploma in journalism from City University in London. As Communications Director for the Black Girl Writers mentoring program, she supports Black women writers by connecting them with professionals. Her first novel is titled "GOD AND THE BLUES" and she is currently working on her new project, "Lost in Havana". She now lives with her family in a small vineyard village in Switzerland.

The artists and the team at Kebbel Villa warmly invite you to the Open Studio!
