THE POCKET ORCHESTRA

by Edoardo Bruni, Vicenza (IT) and Christoph Soldan, Munich (DE)

In the 19th century, literature for four-handed piano was often published to promote new compositions. In an era without records, CDs or similar media, composers had to rely on their large-scale orchestral works being performed initially in salons. Johannes Brahms, the Hamburg native, also called this performance practice 'Kattermäng,' which is nothing but the Hanseatic, playful version of 'jouer à quatre mains,' meaning playing the piano with four hands. It is therefore no surprise that Brahms himself arranged his symphonies also for this ensemble. Christoph Soldan and his wonderful musician colleague, the pianist and composer Edoardo Bruni from Trento, have been connected by a mutual aesthetic understanding of music performances for a long time. Together, they will perform several works by Beethoven and Bruni as well as Brahms's 4th Symphony.
