Nellie Appleby’s life and work are deeply engrossed with the study of ecology and plants, the cultivation of gardens and beauty, the exploration of wildness and the examination of culture through the actions of photography and sculpture. Appleby is known for her large-scale camera-less photography, her textile cyanotypes and her sculptures made with living, growing plants on fabric and ceramic forms.
Nellie Appleby (born 1973) is from the mountains of Virginia and spent influential childhood years in Botswana. She has exhibited her works at Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami, Alliance Française de Gaborone (Botswana), ChaShaMA, Wildfist, The Cave (NYC), Dimensions Variable, Oolite Arts, The Deering Estate (Miami), Museo Ex-Convento del Carmen (Guadalajara) and The Studios of Key West among others. She has received many grants, including two South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowships and a Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Fellowship. She has been awarded residencies including Oberpfälzer Künstlerhaus at Kebbel Villa (Germany), Vermont Studio Center, VCCA, Carrizozo AIR, Blue Mountain Center, Maitland Art & History Museum, and Residencia en la Tierra (Colombia). She earned a BA in Anthropology from the University of Virginia and an MFA in Photography and Film from Virginia Commonwealth University. Commissioned by Art in Public Places Miami-Dade County, she created large-scale works for the Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport, Miami.
Appleby lives and works between the mountains of Virginia and the islands of Key West, Florida.
