Born in Schwerin, artist Maik Schrainer explores the human body in his paintings, graphic works and sculptures. His often large-format paintings typically focus on the depiction of physicality. Like a researcher, he examines the multifaceted appearance of skin, a boundary between inside and outside, as well as its constant mutability. The dynamics of movement captured by Schrainer in his paintings, as they result from stretching and compression, are primarily fed by the study of the nude and the close observation of the body's diverse repertoire of gestures and its emotional qualities.

Schrainer grounds the artistic-practical dimension - the exploration of the phenomena of skin and carnality - in his theoretical examination of the tradition of representing the body in European art history and his examination of the cultural history of humankind. He has been studying fine arts and history at the Casper David Friedrich Institute at the University of Greifswald since 2018.
