Anlässlich ihrer Wiedereröffnung nach Abschluss der baulichen Maßnahmen zur Verbesserung der Barrierefreiheit präsentiert die Kebbel Villa in Zusammenarbeit mit der Boris Lurie Art Foundation die Ausstellung NEIN! Boris Lurie und NO!art.

Der Künstler Boris Lurie (1924 Leningrad, UdSSR – 2008 New York, NY, USA) wuchs in Riga (Lettland) in einer wohlhabenden jüdischen Familie auf. Sein Vater Ilja war Kaufmann, seine Mutter Schaina Zahnärztin. Mit der deutschen Besetzung 1941 wurde die Familie im Ghetto von Riga interniert. Luries Mutter, seine Großmutter, seine jüngere Schwester und seine Jugendliebe wurden am 8. Dezember 1941 im Zuge des Massakers von Rumbula, bei dem Angehörige der SS in einem Wald nahe Riga etwa 27.500 jüdische Menschen erschossen, ermordet.

Boris Lurie überlebte gemeinsam mit seinem Vater die Zwangsarbeit im sogenannten Kleinen Ghetto sowie die Deportationen in das Arbeitslager Lenta und in die Konzentrationslager Salaspils, Stutthof und Buchenwald. Im April 1945 wurden Vater und Sohn von US-amerikanischen Soldaten im Außenlager Magdeburg-Polte befreit.

1946 emigrierten beide in die Vereinigten Staaten nach New York City, wo Lurie bis zu seinem Tod lebte und arbeitete. Er bezeichnete sich selbst als „privilegierten“ Überlebenden und sah sich nie in der Rolle eines Opfers. Dennoch prägte die Auseinandersetzung mit Gewalt, Machtmissbrauch und kollektiver Ohnmacht sein künstlerisches Schaffen zeitlebens.

Lurie entwickelte eine kompromisslose Bildsprache, in der sich Collage, Malerei, Fotografie und Assemblage verbinden. Durch die wiederholte Gegenüberstellung von Motiven des Holocaust mit den dunklen Seiten der Konsumkultur entstanden Werke von eindringlicher politischer und sozialer Provokation.

Die Ausstellung in der Kebbel Villa versammelt zentrale Arbeiten aus verschiedenen Schaffensphasen, beginnend mit der frühen War Series ab 1946. Einen Schwerpunkt bilden Werke aus der zentralen Phase der NO!art-Bewegung der frühen 1960er-Jahre. Ergänzt wird die Präsentation durch ausgewählte Arbeiten von Luries NO!art-Kollegen Sam Goodman (1919 Toronto – 1967 New York, NY, USA) und Stanley Fisher (1926–1980, New York, NY, USA).

Erstmals öffentlich gezeigt werden vier undatierte Arbeiten Luries, in denen die deutsche Antwortpartikel „NEIN“ im Zentrum steht. Jeweils eine dieser Arbeiten ist in jedem der vier Ausstellungsräume platziert.

Lurie, der in jungen Jahren Deutsch lernte und ein deutschsprachiges Gymnasium besuchte, betrachtete Deutsch – trotz seiner traumatischen Erfahrungen während der NS-Zeit – als seine „zweite Muttersprache“. Deutschland gegenüber stand er nicht grundsätzlich ablehnend; in den 1970er-Jahren erwog er sogar, von New York nach Berlin zu ziehen.

Der im Begriff der NO!art angelegte Widerstand gegen die Kommerzialisierung von Kunst prägte auch Luries Haltung gegenüber dem Kunstmarkt. Konsequenterweise verweigerte er zeitlebens den Verkauf seiner Werke. Seinen Lebensunterhalt bestritt er stattdessen durch Aktivitäten an der Börse, auf deren Gebiet er nachweislich ein ausgeprägtes Geschick entwickelte.

Boris Luries Arbeiten wurden in zahlreichen Einzel- und Gruppenausstellungen im In- und Ausland gezeigt, darunter im Neuen Museum Nürnberg (2025, 2024, 2017), im Zentrum für verfolgte Künste, Solingen (2022), im Museum of Jewish Heritage, New York (2022), im Kunstmuseum Riga Bourse (2020), im Jüdischen Museum Berlin (2016) sowie in der Gedenkstätte Buchenwald (1998/99). Nach seinem Tod trugen Forschungs- und Ausstellungsstipendien sowie die Boris Lurie Art Foundation maßgeblich zur Erhaltung und internationalen Sichtbarkeit seines Werkes bei.

Ein reich bebilderter Ausstellungskatalog mit Texten von Rudij Bergmann, Jürgen Dehm, Georg Imdahl und Dietmar Rübel in deutscher und englischer Sprache ist in Vorbereitung.
