István Haász was born in Gönc, Hungary, in 1946. After studying at the Teacher Training College in Eger (1964–1968) and the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest (1975–1979), he developed a diverse body of artistic work that brought him international recognition early on.
From 1988 to 2008, Haász was a lecturer at the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design in Budapest. His work has been honoured with numerous prizes and scholarships, including awards in Torun (1990), Esztergom (1997) and Nowy Sacz (2013), as well as prestigious grants from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation (1991, 1996), the DAAD (1992) and the Hungarian Academy in Rome (1999). In 1994, he received the Golden Cross of Merit of the Republic of Hungary, in 2002 the Munkácsy Prize and in 2010 the honour of ‘Meritorious Artist of the Republic of Hungary’.
In 2008, Haász became a member of the OSAS (Open Structures Art Society) in Budapest. A year later, he taught as a guest lecturer at the Faculty of Architecture at the Budapest University of Technology and was also accepted into the Széchenyi Academy of Literature and Art. Further stays and teaching assignments took him to Worpswede, Munich, Frankfurt am Main and Bremen-Vallauris, among other places.
